I have had NO complications from surgey. The risk of Dying from the surgery is the same as any other surgery. The surgery is only performed by specialists and the risk of complications has fallen to an all-time low. In fact the complication with the highest risk is not dying, it is Divorce!
My surgery was covered 100% through my insurance (Tricare Prime). You have to be at least 100 pounds overweight with a BMI of at least 40. Some insurance companies require psychiatric evaluations, appointments with a nutritionist and other requirements before getting a bypass. Mine did not.
Yes, you can have children. They question that you not get pregnant until at least one year after surgery to allow your body to heal. Any pregnancy post-surgery are considered high risk, though. I know 6 people that have had gastric bypass and then had children. none of them had complications and they had gorgeous, healthy babies!
The surgery is not for everyone. It is not a quick fix to being obese. it is a tool. It will limit the amount of food you can eat. You cannot eat fried foods, high stout foods or foods with sugar. You must watch the amounts you eat since you pouch can only hold 1/2 to 1 cup of food. You have to make sure you eat 70 grams of protien a day. Hair loss is normal after 6 months and stops after your weight stablizes. B12 deficiency is common and some people must take B12 shots for life. You will have to take vitamin supplements and calcium supplements for life.
It is not "unnatural". I don't feel like a failure or useless. I am healthier than ever. I did this for my family. I wanted to see my 5 year ancient graduate from college. I wanted to be around to see him marry and have children of his own. I didn't do this to become "skinny" but to become healthy and live longer.
